Natural vs. Synthetic Fibers: Explained

Natural vs. Synthetic Fibers: Explained

Do you read clothing labels to try to see what materials your future clothes purchase is made of? Many fabrics can be used in the creation of our everyday clothes, however not all have the same impact on our health and planet. This article will give you an insight into the difference between natural and synthetic fibers.

Natural vs Synthetic Fibers:

Natural Fibers:

Known for their breathability, softness, and environmentally-friendly properties. Natural fibers are always made from either animals or plants. Some examples of natural fibers: Cotton, Wool, Bamboo, Silk and Linen.

Pros and Cons:

Advantages:

  • Good for the environment.
  • Breathable.
  • Soft.
  • Hypoallergenic.

Disadvantages:

  • Can wrinkle and shrink.
  • Pesticides might be used.
  • Intensive farming processes.

Synthetic Fibers:

Synthetic fibers are man made through chemical processes and are best known for its durability and its vibrant colours. This manufacturing process is preferred in the fashion industry due to its cost-effectiveness. Some examples of synthetic: Nylon, Polyester, Rayon and Spandex.

Advantages:

  • Longevity.
  • Keep colour well and not so much fading.
  • Cheap

Disadvantages:

  • Contribute to pollution.
  • Keeps the heat so it is not really breathable.
  • Chemicals and non-renewable resources used

Synthetic fibers are bad for the environment and contribute to pollution due to the petrochemicals used during its creation. Whereas, natural fibers decompose more quickly and are safer for the environment.

If you want to keep your pieces for years, it is important to apply care and maintenance. Usually, their labels will guide you, but as a rule of thumb: natural fibers need gentle washing, like cold washing and staying below 30 degrees, to prevent shrinkage. Synthetic fibers can handle more robust washing methods.

For us, natural fibers is as clear winners, not only for their positive environmental impact but also for their gentle touch on your skin. When it comes to dressing your little ones, we take these two points very seriously. We mostly opt for cotton pieces, such as our lovely Twill trousers made from 100% cotton. Occasionally, we might explore other fibers like bamboo for our cute baby sleepsuits. However, we acknowledge that this choice is highly personal, and we understand that some people may prefer synthetic fabrics due to factors like cost. We hope that after reading this article, you will have a clearer perspective.
